The team led by Desplaces Ducher Architectes envisaged the renovation of the Cézanne lecture theatre as a key moment in the renewal of the École du Louvre: a bright, understated and flexible space, in heritage continuity with the Louvre Palace and adapted to the demands of contemporary teaching.
The project reveals the qualities of the existing space — volume, light, material — by showcasing the Saint-Maximin stone, consistent with the school’s recent renovations. Light oak and acoustic carpet create a warm atmosphere conducive to concentration.
Unchanged since 1972, the lecture theatre is completely rethought to offer comfort that meets contemporary expectations. The tiered seating is redrawn in a curve for better accessibility and sightlines, the stage is lowered to encourage exchange, while flexible seating and careful acoustics create a setting conducive to listening. State-of-the-art audiovisual equipment is discreetly integrated at the back of the stage, without altering the simplicity of the space.
Conceived as a showcase space, the new lecture theatre will host lectures, conferences, screenings and performances. Flexible furniture, programmable lighting and durable materials allow fine adaptation to different uses, in a responsible, frugal and lasting approach.
